Troubleshooting

My Air Conditioning Unit Failed To Come On.

  1. Make sure that the thermostat is set in the “COOL” position.

  2. Make sure the temperature on the thermostat is turned down low enough for the unit to come on.

  3. Check the circuit breakers in the breaker box and make sure that they are in the “ON” position.

  4. Check the outdoor unit “disconnect switch” to make sure it is in the “ON” position. The disconnect switch is located near the outdoor unit, usually in a grey mounted box.

  5. Make sure that the blower motor of your furnace is running. When the thermostat is in “COOL” position, the furnace blower should be running. If it is not, check the on/off switch to ensure it is in the “ON” position.

  6. Make sure that your furnace filter has been changed recently. An excessively blocked filter can cause the outdoor air conditioner unit to shut off because of poor air flow.

  7. Change your filters every month.

  8. Check the return vents to make sure they are free and clear and not blocked by drapery or furniture

What Should I Do If My Air Conditioner Freezes Up?

To avoid further damage, the first thing to do when your AC freezes up is to turn the air conditioner off. From the thermostat panel, switch the AC from “cool” or “auto” to "off" and switch the fan mode from "auto" to "on". Setting your AC fan mode to  "on" will help the system receive warm air to defrost the frozen AC line or coil.

What A Homeowner Can Do For HVAC Maintenance

  1. Clean or change the HVAC filters. Filters capture airborne pollutants and keep them from entering ducts and your living space. When filters become clogged, the system loses efficiency and uses more energy to heat and cool. Dirty filters are one of the main causes of calls for HVAC repairs. Filters should be cleaned or changed approximately every three months. If you have pets or live in an area with a lot of dust, you should change the filter more often

  2. Keep outside unit clean and clear from vegetation. The condenser unit, usually installed outside, must be kept clear of leaves, vegetation and other debris. Over time, dust and debris can coat the fan and condenser coils situated inside the housing, which affects efficiency. Air must flow freely above and around all sides of the unit

  3. Schedule regular Preventative Maintenance Service with a HVAC professional.  During a Preventative Maintenance Service, the certified professionals of M.D. Heating and Air examine every component of the HVAC system.
